Energy Saving Concepts At An Early Age

Aussie Home Energy Solutions For School Energy Monitoring ProjectsMonitoring electricity in your school environment, is a great way to get students interested in the concepts of energy saving, at an early age.

It is a further boost for classroom and school interaction, whereby the overall knowledge of energy usage and costs is dramatically increased. This knowledge can easily be taken onboard and in the future used in both business and residential markets.

The cost of any school electricity monitoring project is easily offset by the savings made by the establishment.

Benefits Of Monitoring Electricity At School

A well thought out and implemented electricity monitoring project can result in the following benefits for your school and students,

  • Reduced school electricity costs
  • Electricity usage and cost awareness amongst students, staff and parents
  • Efficient use of appliances
  • A reduced carbon footprint
  • An understanding of how to read and record electricity meters
  • An understanding of electricity billing and tariffs
  • An understanding of where, when and what is using energy
  • The introduction of an inter-school energy certificate
  • The ability to identify possible energy and cost savings
  • The ability to create with increased understanding a 'School Energy Statement'

An electricity monitoring project is a major part of any schools energy management plan.

Adding Electricity Monitoring To The Curriculum

Electricity Consumption & Generation Data - PVOutput Electricity / Solar Monitoring DashboardElectricity monitoring can be effectively added to your school curriculum through various subject areas. Energy awareness projects are a great opportunity to promote responsible attitudes to the environment, where students are directly involved in the collecting and analysis of monitoring data. This process showing how the energy is used, within the school and how it could be reduced.

Monitoring school electricity can be included in such subjects as,

  • Science - Supply, light, heat and power, environmental awareness
  • Maths - Calculation and graphing of electricity monitoring data
  • History - Electricity consumption, lifestyles, industrial revolution and climate change
  • Language - Presentation skills and increased awareness
  • Technology - Electricity, energy resources and services

Action Leads To Alternative Improvements

If your school has limited energy management, then a school electricity monitoring project is not only going to save your school money off energy costs, but can further increase awareness, leading to further alternative significant improvements such as,

  • Increased practical project work for students
  • Increase sustainability within the school
  • Become a community leader in sustainability
  • Improve the environment within the school
  • Meeting public sector energy related targets

School Electricity Monitoring Projects Highlight

Aussie Home Energy Monitoring Solutions For School Classroom Electricity Monitoring ProjectsWhen electricity usage and cost data has been analysed by students, such findings have have been addressed,

  • Lights turning off automatically when classrooms are empty
  • Lighting not being used with a set level of natural daylight
  • Heating systems used more efficiently
  • Hot water used more efficiently
  • Cost of teaching aids such as projectors and white boards
  • Efficient use of computers and printers
  • Service and maintenance of appliances increased for efficiency
  • Control equipment installed
  • Canteen / kitchen equipment costs
  • Vending machine costs
  • Ventilation systems efficiency
  • After hours electricity usage

The 5 Steps Of School Energy Management

When you are deciding to implement a school energy management system, it is easy to break it down into five steps.

School Energy Statement - This is an easy to understand energy statement, with the school Principal's commitment. An energy coordinator is assigned to set up the energy monitoring team and perform such tasks as,

      - Assessing energy use in the school
      - Identifying areas where savings can be made
      - Creating an energy saving action plan
      - Coordinating the implementation and performance of the energy saving plan
      - Monitoring energy usage and costs
      - Reporting on the progress of the energy saving plan

A School's Energy Statement should briefly explain,

      - The overall objectives with respect to energy saving and management
      - Targets and expectations along with details of how these are going to be achieved

Discover The Possible Electricity Savings - Energy bills and meter readings need to be understood. Where the electricity is being used and when are both very important along with any possible cost savings.

Making A Plan - A school energy action plan sets out the targets to be achieved and can act as a benchmark for success.

Taking Action - By taking action you will be increasing awareness, motivating students, staff and parents and implementing your energy action plan.

Checking Progress - The checking and recording of meter readings, electricity bills and appliance monitoring, can highlight the electricity used per student, per classroom, per time period etc. Inter-school electricity monitoring results can further increase competition and further savings.

Features Of Our School Electricity Monitoring Systems

  • Support up to ten circuits / appliances per monitoring system
  • Unlimited multiple monitors per system

Example School Monitoring Hardware & Features

The requirement was for the incoming power to two school blocks, to monitored along with four of the classrooms. The monitoring would need to be easily displayed in a common area, be tamper proof and support PC analysis and online access to data 24/7.

The hardware required for such a scenario would involve six monitoring circuits. Whilst all circuits can be shown on any one monitor, for the purpose of displaying the data to students with easy visual access, each monitor would display a separate circuit. The security of the monitoring installation was achieved by fixing the monitors behind a perspex screen.

  • Monitor #1 - Block 1 : 3 Phase Main Incoming Power
  • Monitor #2 - Classroom #1 : 1 Phase Power
  • Monitor #3 - Classroom #2 : 1 Phase Power
  • Monitor #4 - Block 2 : 3 Phase Main Incoming Power
  • Monitor #5 - Classroom #3 : 1 Phase Power
  • Monitor #6 - Classroom #4 : 1 Phase Power

One of the monitors has a comms connection to a PC, allowing for either 24/7 visual display of the monitoring data of all circuits, or periodic access to the data for download into the software application. This data can also be input to spreadsheets for classroom comparison.

Another monitor is connected via a LAN cable to the internet, allowing for easy 24/7 access to the same data.

Learning How To Make A Well Educated Guess

Solar Power Offsetting School Sunny Hour ElectricityA school electricity monitoring project providing answers to total school electricity usage, results in the school being in a position to make a well educated guess, on whether alternative energy sources such as solar, are really going to make a difference.

Further decisions will be able to be made based on accurate data, as to whether certain appliances need to be replaced or have added control circuitry installed. This will allow your school to join a growing number of energy efficient schools within Australia.

Your school may have already been involved in the NSW National Schools Solar Program [NSSP], where your students at the time gained a very good insight into the schools sustainability and energy use.

Could you be doing more now though, for the new students and the school?

The answers to your school's increased electricity savings, could be in your classrooms! So why not make an effort to drive this energy efficient education in your school.

There is only one way to find out what your school could be saving. CONTACT US now to discuss getting a school electricity monitoring project up and running, easily tailored to your school's requirements.
